The Femedic is currently accepting pitches from writers who have expertise in women’s health, particularly those with a focus on marginalized groups such as AME women, trans women, sex workers, and other underrepresented communities. Even if you’re new to writing, they encourage you to submit a pitch; and to help, they’ve provided a resource:
What They Want
- Content written by medical professionals addressing clinical questions related to physical and mental health.
- Typically commissioned rather than unsolicited pitches.
- Content that covers non-clinical aspects of health, including social, political, identity, cultural, discrimination, and lifestyle factors.
- First-person essays and narratives that raise awareness and explore experiences of underrepresented identities.
- Features that offer bold, challenging perspectives and report in-depth on health-related issues.
- Describing health and personal experiences, especially from underrepresented identities.
- In-depth reported stories that offer new perspectives or teach readers something new. Topics might include underfunded medical research, media misrepresentation of conditions, or issues disproportionately affecting certain communities.
- Clearly specify the affected group (e.g., people with endometriosis, lesbians, trans people).
- Avoid unsupported cause-and-effect relationships.
- Focus on well-formed arguments that serve the readers.
